UNESCO World Natural Heritage Kellerwald-Edersee National Park

A protected conservation area, the national park is home to one of the largest remaining unspoiled copper beech forests in Central Europe.

It belongs to an international UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Ancient Beech Forests of Europe". Riddled with hiking trails that allow visitors to easily explore the wilderness on foot, the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is otherwise marked only by ancient forest relics, natural springs and streams, and impressive boulders and rock faces. The 68km Urwald Hiking Trail (Urwaldsteig) winds through the park's oak and beech trees to clearings that afford magnificent views of the blue-green Edersee Reservoir and steep, wooded hillsides and ravines that surround it.

The Kellerwald-Edersee National Park Visitors Centre (NationalparkZentrum) offers offers fun and interactive exhibits and educational insight into the park and its heritage, as well as its unique flora and fauna. Exhibition highlights include a 4D movie experience in which visitors can explore the wilderness in the company of a national park ranger.
