Fairy-tale wild ...

At the gates of the documenta city of Kassel in the northernmost tip of Hessen, lies the largest contiguous forest area of Hessen: the Reinhardswald. Together with the idyllic Diemeltal, the Reinhardswald was designated a nature park in autumn 2017. Mighty, centuries-old Hute oaks, extensive beech and spruce forests as well as species-rich limestone grassland biotopes accompany you here.

The fairy-tale holiday region of the Reinhardswald nature park is framed by the rivers Weser, Fulda and Diemel and attracts visitors not only with its varied and species-rich nature but also with numerous cultural offers and sights.

The "German Fairytale Route" passes through the nature park - you will find traces of the famous Brothers Grimm everywhere. At Trendelburg Castle you can meet Rapunzel and the Sababurg Castle takes you to the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. At the foot of the Sababurg you will find the Sababurg Zoo, founded in 1571, the oldest zoological park in Europe with over 80 different animal species, including numerous native wild animal species such as wolf, lynx, bison and wild horses. The Sababurg jungle is only a stone's throw away from the zoo. More than 600 years old gnarled oak trees and impressive deadwood structures can be seen here. They are not only a magnet for visitors, but also a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species. Whether on foot, by bike or from the water, the Reinhardswald Nature Park can be actively experienced in many ways. Well-marked circular and route hiking trails and the three certified river cycle paths along the Weser, Diemel and Fulda lead you to the most beautiful places in the nature park. And those who like it relaxed can explore the historic half-timbered towns and villages, visit museums or relax in the Wesertherme.
