Massive basalt cones and enchanted lakes

The Naturpark Habichtswald offers an impressive range of events and attractions at the gates of the cultural city of Kassel.

Dense deciduous forests and windswept, treeless plateaus; massive basalt cones and enchanted lakes; romantic castle ruins and expansive views across small-scale fields and meadows that have been cultivated for centuries… These are the small things that make people fall in love with the Naturpark Habichtswald. Over 50 car parks make it easy for you to access this walkers’ paradise. The “Habichtswaldsteig” premium hiking trail takes walkers in an 85-kilometre route from Lake Edersee to Naumburg and Kassel before reaching Zierenberg. Besides this main route, eight extra tours are available as circular trails for full-day and half-day walks. The numerous guided walks in the nature reserve offer special natural experiences. Trained rangers take visitors on a journey of discovery, pointing out the region’s unique features surprising guests with new facts and revealing nature’s little secrets. The Dörnberg area is one of the most impressive landscapes in the Habichtswald nature reserve. People have always been drawn to its cultural history, geology and special flora and fauna. The Habichtswald Nature Reserve Centre is also located on the Dörnberg. It’s not just a great starting point for walks, but also provides detailed information about the entire nature reserve and its natural, historical and geological conditions, as well as about leisure activities and events within the region. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park is situated in the eastern part of the Naturpark Habichtswald and attracts visitors from far beyond the region.
