The Westerwald-Steig takes you along 235 km from Herborn to Bad Hönningen in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Hessian town of Herborn stands out for its historical old town with buildings from eight different centuries. Make sure you take some time to explore this town. The first two of the 16 stages take you up to the foot of the Fuchskaute. This mountain measures 657 metres, making it the tallest in the Westerwald. After around 26 kilometres, the trail leaves Hessen. The first stage takes walkers past the bird park near Uckersdorf and prehistoric cave dwellings (which you can enter) and a stalactite cave. The trail provides plentiful views as it takes you up the Fuchskaute across the basalt plateaus of the Upper Westerwald. You can enjoy a relaxing break at the Heisterberger Weiher pond along the way.
