What luck it is, that everyone knows… Here in Hanau is where it all began.

Right in the heart of the town...

on the market square, stands an impressive bronze monument. Dedicated in 1896, it is the national monument to the Brothers Grimm, and attracts large numbers of visitors from all over the world.

From May to July every year, the world of Grimms' fairy tales comes alive at the Märchenfestspiele (fairytale festival) at the Philippsruhe Palace amphitheatre. But the official "Brothers Grimm town" is not only famous for the collectors of fairy tales. Other famous personalities have also lived here, such as Karoline von Günderode, one of the most colourful characters in German Romanticism. The cultural town of Hanau particularly comes to life every Wednesday and Saturday, when the central market square is transformed into one of Hessen's largest and most beautiful weekly markets.
