The mountainous Rhön region...

...is situated at the very centre of Germany, along Hessen's borders with Thuringia and Bavaria. The Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve envelops the region, spilling into these neighbouring states.

SEPARATED FROM THE VOLCANIC REGION OF VOGELSBERG BY THE FULDA VALLEY AND ITS WINDING RIVER, THE REGION'S LARGELY WOODLESS VOLCANIC MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OFFER MAGNIFICENT PANORAMIC VIEWS, UNIQUE FLORA AND FAUNA AND SEEMINGLY ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR BRACING OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.

The Rhön is one of Germany's top HIKING destinations, with over 6,000km of well-signposted trails including 25 certified circular trails as well as an 180km premium route. Cyclists will discover a wealth of biking trails that weave through the region's lush mountains and valleys. The lakes and rivers here offer plentiful opportunities for canoeing and swimming; back on land, you can take your pick from golfing, climbing, horse riding and even llama trekking.

During the warmer months, head up to the region's highest mountain, the Wasserkuppe, to take to the skies on a para- or hang glide or hurtle back down the slopes on a 700m summer toboggan run. Come winter, go to the same spot to indulge in WINTER SPORTS such as snowkiting and downhill or cross-country skiing.

This region isn't just about the great outdoors, however: it has more than its fair share of CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS, too. The town of Bad Hersfeld boasts some 200 listed medieval buildings as well as historic monastry ruins, and in Fulda, you'll find gorgeous Baroque architecture and a stunning cathedral built on the burial site of St Boniface. There are countless annual festivals and events to attend, from folk festivals, carnival celebrations and open-air concerts to Bad Kissingen's international classical music festival.

After all this activity, embrace some REST AND RELAXATION. The Rhön has been a wellness destination for centuries and is home to eight spa towns offering a wealth of health and beauty treatments and premium pampering packages at their various spa hotels and thermal baths. If you enjoy your food and drink, you're in the right place for that, too: locals take great pride in their regional specialties, from trout and lamb to bread and beer, and you'll find the locals to be hospitable hosts. Finally, with accommodation options ranging from farmstays, guesthouses and cosy holiday cottages to your own tent or caravan or a stylish hotel, you're sure to find the perfect place for a well-earned, good night's sleep.
